We Are Understood and Loved
God gets us because Jesus, being full God, decided to become a man.
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:5-11 (KJV)
God tells us to let this mind be in us, meaning we are to have the same attitude. No matter what we face in life, we are to have the same attitude that Jesus did. He was fully God, equally God. He had the form and nature of God, yet He made Himself of no reputation and emptied Himself, meaning He laid aside His heavenly glory. The New International Version says He made Himself nothing. Jesus gave up His divine form to be one of us- a human in human form. He took on the form of a servant. This is true humility. He made Himself so low as to die for us.
Then, God exalted Him and gave Jesus the highest Name. Because of His humility to lower Himself, all will bow before Him and confess that Jesus is Lord. We confess Him as our Lord now in order to be saved (Romans 10:9-10) and later those who did not confess Him will confess His Lordship at their judgment.
Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:14-16 (KJV)
We have Jesus Christ as our great high Priest. He’s been touched with the feelings of our infirmities, meaning He is in touch with our feelings. He gets it. He has compassion on us because He walked where we now walk. He understands the human experience firsthand. He was one of us. Now, He is in His glorified body, forever changed. He will never again be in His previous form. Although he is fully God, He will always show forth the fact that He was a man. Because Jesus understands what is like to be a human being, we can pour out our heart and soul to Him. We can tell Him what we are feeling, what we are fighting, and the inner most thoughts of our hearts. He won’t scoff at us or give us a hard time.
Because Jesus became one of us, we can go to Him with boldness. Jesus faced everything we faced and overcame it for us. He did it all for you and me. He never sinned, but we did. Yet, He took care of the sin nature that was in us and removed our sins from us. That is how we can come to Him confidently and unashamed. We can approach Him on the throne of grace and obtain mercy and grace to help us.
Boldly means that we can have freedom of speech around Him. We can speak freely without fear. Jesus knows all about us and can help us overcome all we are feeling and facing so we can forge ahead. Jesus knows us and, more importantly, He loves us. He gives His grace to help us and change us so that we decrease and He increases in us. We can rest in Him and in His love because He really does know all about us and loves us no matter what. His experience as a human guarantees that He gets us.
