God In Human Form

And the Lord appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground, Genesis 18:1-2 (KJV)

The Lord appeared to Abraham in human form. This is called a theophany, meaning God in human form before God became a man through Jesus Christ. This was a preincarnate event, meaning before Jesus came to earth as a man in the flesh. This was also before the Old Testament Law.

God became flesh through Christ during the Law. Christ operated under the Old Testament Law. Yet, He superceded the Law by laying down new laws under the Old Testament Law, such as the law of love.

They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. John 8:4-11 (KJV)

The Old Testament Law said to stone her, but grace set her free and saved her from death. God in the flesh was establishing a new law while living under the Old Testament Law.

Now, God becomes flesh through His body, the body of Christ, the church (I Corinthians 12).

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:14-16 (KJV)

I say all that to say this: we have a High Priest, Jesus the Son of God. Christ is compassionate with us in our humanity because He became human- God in the flesh. Yet, he overcame sin, death, and hell and rose again. So, we don’t need to be ashamed. Come to Him boldly with confidence that Jesus will help. Just as God talked with Abraham in the flesh in Genesis, He understands how we feel and what we go through in life.

The Lord will give us all we need to overcome. He will also hear us when we pour out our heart and feelings to Him. There is someone who gets us because Jesus lived as a human. He can help us in our humanity. He will strengthen, love, comfort, teach, guide, and provide what we need.

So, the next time that you feel that nobody knows or cares how you feel, or that no one understands you, think of Jesus. When you need a friend, know that He is closer than a brother and a friend that loves at all times. He is with us all the time, every step along the way. So, yes, God is there. The God who came in human form understands and helps us in our human form.
