How To Approach Jesus

When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. Matthew 8:1-4 (KJV)

Jesus was on a mountain, a high place with God to seek, wait, and be alone with God. Time alone with God is how to be ready to address the needs and demands of a multitude. A leper came to Him, and worshipped Him, asking to be healed. Leprosy is a type or symbol of sin, with the leper being a type of a sinner. The leper came to Jesus in his leprous condition. You must come to Jesus just as you are.

Side Note: When you are born again, you are no longer a sinner. Though you might sin, you are a new creation and are righteous (II Corinthians 5:17, 21). Believers should not identify themselves as sinners.

The way we approach Jesus is important. Before we ask Him for anything, we should come to Him to worship Him. This shows your heart is in the right place. It shows that you value Him and not just what He can do for you. Then, ask Jesus your question or present your request.

Jesus is not put out with our questions and requests. As a matter of fact, He is the Answer. Jesus answered the leper’s questions, and put forth His hand and touched him. This man had leprosy and was highly contagious. No one had touched him in a very long time for fear of contracting leprosy. Jesus isn’t afraid to get involved with us to clean us up. He will touch what no one else will.

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. I Peter 2;24 (KJV)

Jesus’ will is to heal. That is what He told this leper. He died for all, and He wants all to receive salvation, healing, and wholeness. Immediately, the leprous man was cleansed.

Jesus’ touch, His nail-scarred hand, His sacrifice and shed blood; it is enough to cleanse, make whole, and set free!

The leper approached Jesus in an attitude of worship and he received not just healing, but wholeness. The way we approach Jesus is a determining factor in whether we receive or not. It’s all about the heart.
