Proclaiming the Lordship of Jesus- Part 1

Proclaiming the Lordship of Jesus- Part 1

Jesus in Greek is Isous, which is the equivalent of the Hebrew name Yeshua, or Joshua as we might say. It means Yahweh (the Lord) saves, or Yahweh is salvation. It is equivalent to Jehovah, the Great I Am. It means I will be what I need to be and speaks of the God who is present and active (Exodus 3:14).

And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. Matthew 1:21 (KJV)

Joshua, as mentioned in Joshua 1:1 means The Lord Saves. Lord in this case is Kurios, meaning lord, master, ruler, owner, one who has complete authority.

Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. I Corinthians 12:3 (KJV)

This tells us that no one can call Jesus Lord except by the Spirit of God. When we are born again, the Spirit of Christ takes up residence in us, bearing witness that we are saved (Romans 8:16). The Spirit tells us and gives us assurance that Jesus Christ is Lord and was raised from the dead (Acts 17:31, Hebrews 10:22, Colossians 2:2, I Thessalonians 1:5).

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:9-10 (KJV)

As we believe and confess Jesus is Lord, we become saved. Then, as we continue to believe and confess that Christ is Lord, we establish His lordship over everything we face.

Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11 (KJV)

Jesus’ name is above every other name. As we proclaim that Jesus is Lord, everything and every name that we can name, must bow now and be brought under the lordship of Jesus Christ. As we say, “Jesus is Lord,” we make Him Lord over everything and we are putting all things under our feet, because we are His body.

And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all. Ephesians 1:19-23 (KJV)

As we proclaim Jesus as Lord, we enforce our victory in Christ. Jesus won at the cross, overcoming sin, death, satan, demons, and the curse. He rose victoriously with the keys of death and hell (Revelation 1:18). Hell and death cannot prevail against Jesus Christ and His body, the church (I Corinthians 15:55-58). We enforce the victory of heaven on earth until the earthly reign of Jesus (Matthew 16:13-19). When we say “Jesus is Lord,” we are saying He is Yahweh, the Great I Am, just as Jesus said about Himself throughout the Gospel of John. As we confess that Jesus is Lord, we make Him Lord in our lives, causing us to overcome as He did.

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. John 8:58 (KJV)
