A Prudent Wife

House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the Lord. Proverbs 19:14 (KJV)

This shows us something a father can and cannot give his son. That which we can’t get from an earthly father, our heavenly Father will give us. Prudent in Hebrew is sakal, which means intelligent, skilled, wise-acting, attentive, pondering, prosperous, teaching, guide wittingly, insightful, comprehending. A good wife from God has all of these qualities.

When looking for a mate, this principle applies to both men and women, just as Proverbs 31 does. Look for a mate who is godly and Christlike. Look for someone who is as the word prudent bears out: intelligent, skilled, and so forth.

God has given me a godly wife. I must say that she is all that this word defines- and more. I say this to give glory to God, who gave her to me. I want to encourage you that what He has done for one, He will do for anyone whose hearts and lives belong to the Lord. God can give you a spouse who loves Him and who will do you good, not evil, all your days. A virtuous woman of noble charcter can be yours, just like Ruth was in the Book of Ruth.

Even if you are married to someone who does not demonstrate these characteristics, God can change things for you and in you to redeem your marriage relationship. As you demonstrate these things to your spouse, you will begin to reap what you have sown.

Who can find a virtuous and prudent wife? The Lord can. He can make it where the two of you walk in love, unity, knowledge, and blessing, helping one another to become more like Christ. As you do, you’ll bring Him glory, and you’ll be an example for others to show them that what God did for you, He can do for them. When we put God first, He will see to it that we receive His best.
