Kings and Lords
These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.” Revelation 17:14 (NKJV)
Several Scriptures refer to Jesus as the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Fundamentally, this means that Jesus is King over all and is Lord over all. He is the King with a capital K and the Lord with a capital L, but who are the kings and lords that are mentioned with lower case letters?
First of all, kings can refer to earthly rulers, such as leaders of nations and so forth. It can mean presidents, prime ministers, as well as members of earthly royalty. Jesus Christ is the supreme royal authority over them all, and it would behoove them to acknowledge this in how they live and govern.
The lords are those who have authority to lead and to whom people submit in one way or another. Lordship can refer to the superior position of a supervisor or someone such as a law enforcement officer. it speaks of those under whom we position ourselves to obey. We are to respect and honor those in authority over us as long as their requirements do not tell us to go against Scripture. People in these positions are to submit to Christ, and then we are to submit to them.
These are accurate statements, but they fall short in explaining kings and lords. You see, as Christians, we are also kings and lords.
The Bible tells us we are kings and priests (Revelation 1:6, 5:10). This means that we are to rule and reign with Christ in this life. He is our King and we are kings in this life. Thus, He is the King of kings (us).
Lord refers to one who has authority, Jesus has given us His authority. He delegated it to us (Matthew 28:18-20). We are lords over the devil, over the world system, and over our flesh. The name of Jesus gives us authority, making us lords. We are lords because we honor the Lordship of Jesus. Thus, He is the Lord of lords (us).
The King of kings and Lord of lords is Jesus Christ, who rules over and has authority over us and all others.
