Thrones and Keys

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: Luke 1:32 (KJV) emphasis mine

And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; Revelation 3:7 (KJV) emphasis mine

Jesus has been given the throne and key of David.

Throne

Thrones speak of kingship and keys speak of authority. Jesus Christ sits on His throne and rules with authority:

  • By His choice

  • Through His church

  • In the millenium

  • Forever and ever

Jesus is the King of kings and is seated on His throne to rule over all things. We are kings and priests (Revelation 1:6). Romans 5:17 says that we are to rule now in this life. Just as Christ defeated sin, sickness, satan, death, hell, and the grave (Revelation 1:18), we have victory over them as well.

Key

And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Matthew 16:18-19 (KJV)

Jesus has the keys of hell and death, having conquered them and is now ruling over them. In turn, Christ has given us the keys of the kingdom. The gates of hell shall not prevail against us because they didn’t and cannot prevail against Christ. We are Christians. Christ means anointed one and thus we are anointed ones.

The key of David refers to authority, access, and power. Jesus has authority to open and close doors. Access speaks of entry points. Jesus will close doors that are not good for us, blocking access. Yet, He may close a door for only a season to give us access at just the right time. Or it may be a permanent closure to move us on to other things He has for us.

Thrones & Keys

We are seated with Christ in heavenly places. As He is on His throne, we are enthroned with Him (Ephesians 2:6). His victory is our victory. As we enforce what Christ has done for us, we will walk in victory and rule in this life by Christ Jesus (Romans 5:17). We have access to Him and to all we need to be victorious. Every step we take is a step of victory as we use our authority over the enemy. As we overcome, we will be promoted to new and higher levels of position and authority with Him- in the Millenium and throughout eternity. This means we are all learning to overcome to receive better things to come.

Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Luke !0:19 (KJV)

And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. Romans 16:20 (KJV)
