Quality of Life
God has promised us long life. He wants us to live a long life. we have examples in the Bible, both in the Old and New Testaments. Methuselah was the oldest man recorded in Scripture, living 969 years (Genesis 5:27). The Apostle John lived 100 years. Caleb was 85 years of age when he fought and took his mountain (Joshua 14:6-14). How did these and others live long and strong? How was Caleb as strong at 85 as he ever was? Caleb followed God whole-heartedly, and he had another spirit of faith and obedience (Numbers 14:24).
My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. Proverbs 3:1-2 (KJV)
What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. Psalm 34:12-14 (KJV)
For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. I Peter 3:1-11
If we don’t forget God’s Law, or His written Word, keeping His commandments, especially the greatest commandment of love, then we can live long and strong. God’s Word will add years to our life and life to our years.
The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows). John 10:10 (Amplified Bible Classic Edition, AMPC)
Jesus came to give us life- zoe life, everlasting life, life as God has it. That is life more abundantly. God wants our lives to be lives of quality AND quantity. His plan is for our lives to be good and to extend beyond this life and into eternity.
Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. Proverbs 4:10 (KJV)
As we hear and receive God’s Word, the years of our lives will be many. Christ has provided whatever we need as we take God at His Word. Believe and speak and act on His Word, and God will fulfill His Word to you.
With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation. Psalm 91:16 (KJV)
Long life in this verse could be translated length of days. He will give us length of days to satisfy us and show us His salvation. Again, here is the promise of the quantity and quality of life. We can claim it as we abide in God’s Word.
Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. Proverbs 3:16 (KJV)
This is speaking of the wisdom that comes from God’s Word. It gives us length of days, or long life, as well as riches and honor, referring to a good quality of life. As we choose God, speak His Word, and do His Word, we can live out our days with joy and blessings. Men lived long and strong in the Old Testament, but we have a new and better covenant with better promises, meaning we can expect even longer and better lives than they had.
