Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty!
And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. The four beasts in this passage represents all of creation. Psalm 150 tells all creation to praise the Lord. They cry, “Holy, holy, holy!” The fact this is is said three times might be for each member of the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God’s number one attribute is that He is holy. He is separate from sin, yet reaches out to us through Jesus. Jesus came to make us holy and separate from sin and separated to God.
When we encounter God and His holiness, it makes us aware of our sinfulness. Yet, Christ redeemed us to make us worthy to come and worship a holy God. He made us holy and able to come into God’s holy presence.
Lord is the Greek word kurios, which means supremacy, supreme in authority, lord, master, owner. The Old Testament equivalent is Jehovah, Lord, Adonai. It also references Elohim, God. Christ Himself assumed the title of Lord (Matthew 7:21-22).
God is theos in the Greek, meaning supreme divinity, thus the One True God. In Hebrew, it also points to Elohim (power and preeminence) and Jehovah (immutable, unchangeable, eternal and self-sustaining). God’s divine attributes make Him who He is: love, faithful, all-knowing, etc. He is the God of glory and peace.
Almighty is the Greek word pantokrator, which means all-ruling. It speaks of God as the absolute and universal sovereign. It points to Him as omnipotent, with unlimited power over all things.
Which was, and is, and is to come speaks of God’s eternal existence. God was, is, and always will be. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).
We worship God the Father, Jesus the Lamb of God, and Holy Spirit of Truth for who They are and all They’ve done. Let us join Heaven’s worship and declare by our words and lives: “Holy, holy, holy, worthy, worthy, worthy, glory, glory, glory, now and forever to God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit!”
