The Lord Thinks of Us
When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Psalm 8:3-5 (KJV)
These verses tell us that the Lord is mindful of us. God thinks of us. The Bible tells us that David, who wrote this psalm, was a man after God’s own heart (I Samuel 13:14, Acts 13:22), which means he was a man after God’s own pleasure and a man of God’s choice. He lived with the intention of pleasing God.
God is mindful of us because this passage says that God made mankind a little lower than the angels. In Hebrew, the word angels is Elohim, which is actually one of the names for God. This means God made man just a little lower than the Godhead. We are made in His image and likeness (Genesis 1:26-28).
In this passage, creation is a word picture to show that His thoughts towards us are ever-increasing. The universe is always expanding, and this gives us a glimpse of God’s thoughts towards us. Like the universe, His thoughts about us are infinite and unending. No matter how much we think God thinks of us, He thinks of us even more. He uses His creation to say that He is mindful of us. He is always thinking of us and providing all we need.
Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered. Psalm 40:5 (KJV)
O Lord my God is Yahweh Elohim, which refers to the great I Am and the God of creation. His thoughts towards us are innumerable. They can’t be counted.
How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee. Psalm 139:17-18 (KJV)
God’s thoughts and plans are great- both in scope and in number. His thoughts about us are more than can be numbered. His thoughts are precious, weighty, and beyond calculation. Because Ephesians 3:20 says that God can do more than we can ask or think, He goes beyond who we are to who He is. Because He is all-knowing, all-powerful, ever-present, ever-loving, ever-faithful, ever-giving, and all-wise, He thinks of us based on who He is, not based on us or our performance. In other words, He thinks thoughts of love towards us because He is love.
The next time you want to know how God thinks of you, look down at the sand on the seashores of the world. Or, you can look up to the stars. He placed the stars up in the heavens to say, “I’m thinking of you more than you think I am.”
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV)
God is thinking of a good outcome for you no matter who you are or where you are. His thoughts and plans are to prosper us, not to harm us, and to give us a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV).
