Scripture, Song, and Spirit

Scripture, Song, and Spirit

As we learn and know Scripture by the Holy Spirit, He will birth songs in our hearts based on God’s Word. Knowing the Word allows us to sing the Word, and singing the Word helps us to know the Word. As we spend time in God’s Word, Holy Spirit will breathe God’s Word into our spirits. He will write songs on our hearts based on His Word.

David was a prolific songwriter. His songs were written down in Psalms and elsewhere in Scripture. He was a psalmist, or one who loved to sing songs to the Lord. I believe God has many Davids today, the beloved of God, who love to sing to Him.

And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five. I Kings 4:32 (KJV)

Solomon wrote 1,005 songs. He also wrote 3,000 proverbs. What can be spoken can also be sung, just like God’s Word. The more we are filled with God’s Word and Spirit, the more we’ll sing to God and worship Him in song.

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Ephesians 5:18-1 (KJV)

As we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we’ll sing what He sings, says, or otherwise gives us. We will sing:

  • Psalms: Scripture set to music, like David did.

  • Hymns: Songs of the church, sacred compositions, such as “How Great Thou Art.”

  • Spiritual Songs: Songs released and sung by Holy Spirit through us. As we sing in the Spirit, Holy Spirit sings with us and through us. This can lead to supernatural singing such as prophetic songs.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Colossians 3:16 (KJV)

As we abide and dwell in God’s Word and we allow His Word to abide in us, it can result in the teaching and admonition of the precepts of God through the use of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. God will give us grace, or divine ability, to sing His songs based on Christ the Lamb Who was crucified. He is worthy to receive glory, honor, power, majesty, blessing, praise, thanks, wisdom, riches, and kingdom glory.

And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. Revelation 5:11-13 (KJV)

By God’s written Word, we worship Jesus, the Living Word.
