A Glimpse of God's Great Genius
In Psalm 139, we get a glimpse of the great genius of God. Because it is so powerful, I am including the entire psalm here. Read through it thoughtfully and see the genius of our God. I also encourage you to read it in the New Living Translation (NLT), which is also a powerful rendering of this psalm.
O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it. Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee. Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men. For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain. Do not I hate them, O Lord, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies. Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:1-24 (KJV)
In this psalm, we see several aspects of God’s greatness and His limitless wisdom and intelligence in creation. Some of the amazing characteristics of who He is are woven through these verses. God is all-knowing, or omniscient (verses 1-6, 16, 23). God is ever-present, or omnipresent (verses 7-16). He is light according to verses 11-12. Verses 13-18 tell us that God is all-powerful.
God is without a doubt, the Genius above all geniuses. No on can match Him in creativity. There are over 8 billion people on the planet and even more are being born. Why? Because God is infinite and eternal. Each person is personally thought out and planned by God Himself. He decides who they will be, where they will be born, and what they will be able to do. He is all-knowing and understands how to make each and every one for His purpose. Every individual has an assignment on this earth, and they have been created with the distinct qualities and abilities for that assignment. He has made us male or female and, according to Genesis 1:27, that’s all there is by the way. if you aren’t sure, just check the original parts you were born with.
God knows all about each of us. Because He is all-knowing, He knows what we think, whether sitting or standing, coming or going. He knows what we will think and say before we do. He knows what we like and don’t like. He knows our habits, behaviors, and attitudes. He knows and feels our hurts. He sees our mistakes, wrongs, failures, sins, and weaknesses- and He knows how to help us with them. No matter where we go, God is there. He is everywhere at one time to be a personal God for each of us.
God is light, loving, patient, just and faithful. His Word illuminates and shows us the way, no matter how much darkness surrounds us. We need not be in the dark when God is our light.
Because God is all-powerful, there is nothing He can’t do. He made each of us as individuals, unique, gifted, talented, and full of ability. He created our hair, skin, eyes, height, and all our features. The genius of God is evident simply in the complex and amazing nature of the human body. If we consider just one part of the body, such as the eye, we are astounded at God’s genius. How remarkable is the engineering and design that goes into making the eye, something that can take in light and send signals to the brain telling us what is before us.
God makes each person to show how great and glorious our God is. His omniscience, His power, His continuous presence, His loving kindness- it is all on display in mankind for us to see and admire. He is so unique. No one can come close to matching Him. And He keeps making new people to express Himself! He is infinite and endless. There is no one like Him and no one more powerful or with greater knowledge than Him. He is the Most High God. No one is higher. Everything declares that God is- every song, book, teaching, and activity under the sun points to the existence of God. Even those who declare there is no God are the creation of the God they reject and prove that He exists. All of creation points to Him (Psalm 19:1).
No one can or ever will come to the end of God. He has no beginning or end. When we go to be with God, we will be with Him forever. He will reveal Himself to us over and over again, because it takes all eternity to reveal the Eternal One.
