The Reproach is Rolled Away
And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way. And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole. And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day. Joshua 5:7-9 (KJV)
Gilgal means rolling. They were circumcised and God rolled away the reproach of Egypt, which referred to bondage and slavery and the disgrace and shame it brought.
But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. Romans 2:29 (KJV) emphasis mine
Circumcision is now a heart matter, a spiritual thing. At salvation, God rolled away the reproach of the old man, the sinful nature that had produces a sinful lifestyle.
In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Colossians 2:11 (KJV)
Circumcision symbolizes a cutting away of the old. We are separated from the old in order to embrace the new in Christ. We put off the sins of the flesh by saying no to our flesh because we have a new nature. We are a new creation, a new born-again spirit. Our spirits are born of the Spirit of God.
So, our reproach has been rolled away. Because God rolled away the stone from Jesus’ tomb, He rolled away the reproach of Christ- the shame He bore on our behalf. Our disgrace has been rolled away and now there is no condemnation in Christ.
So, now you can walk in newness of life. The old has passed. There’s no more living in Egypt, which means House of Bondage. Now, we are God’s house. He dwells in us because our reproach has been rolled away and we are made new creations. We’re done with the old life. It has been cut away, rolled away. Now we live the new life since Christ is in us. He now lives His life in and through us.
All the reproach has been rolled off of us. We have been crucified, buried, raised, ascended, and seated with Christ, reigning in life.
