The Word Is The Power

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Romans 1:16 (KJV)

This verse is packed with so much. Often we pay attention to the part that says “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ,” and emphasize that part while casually reading the rest. This verse tells us that the gospel is the power of God that carries salvation. That’s quite a statement.

Gospel means good news and comes from the same Greek root words as the word evangelist. The message that Jesus Christ died and rose again to pay our sin debt and place us in right standing with God is indeed good news. The gospel is God’s message of salvation proclaimed. It is His Word being shared with others, and it brings salvation to those who will believe it.

Salvation is a word that means more than meets the eye. It is the Greek word soterio and refers to salvation, healing, rescue, safety. It pictures wholeness and provision in every area of life. Salvation brings us everything we need from God- not just a ticket to heaven. Salvation meets every need of mankind.

Power is the Greek word dunamis and is where we get the word dynamite. The gospel, the good news of God’s Word is full of power. And that power produces salvation, or everything we need. It saves us from hell and life without God, and even if we are born again, it is still producing salvation for us. It is giving us everything we need in this life. It produces wholeness.

The Word of God is the power to produce everything we need. It produces right standing with God, healing, emotional wellbeing, prosperity, guidance, and anything else that we require to live the Christian life and share Jesus with others. It is true that we are not ashamed to share Jesus and tell the good news of what He has done for us because the Word is the power that gives us everything we need. Yes, the Word is the power.
