Build According to God's Purpose
And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build an house unto my name. I Kings 5:5 (KJV)
Solomon purposed to build God a house. Any great endeavor begins with purpose. Purpose in Hebrew is amar and means to say, speak, answer, command, call, promise, demand, desire, determine, intend. It refers to the simple act of communicating with the spoken word. When God puts something in our hearts, we must speak it out to see it come about. Otherwise, it just stays in our hearts. We must have a purpose and then build with that purpose.
Purpose comes from God- by His Word, Spirit and revelation. God speaks His Word to your heart by His Spirit and this bring revelation. You see and know what God wants you to do- thus you receive purpose. I Kings Chapters 5-8 records Solomon building God’s temple. Purpose is only realized through God. Unless the Lord builds the house, we labor in vain (Psalm 127:1).
And Solomon determined to build an house for the name of the Lord, and an house for his kingdom. II Chronicles 2:1 (KJV)
Determined in this verse is the same word, amar, translated as purposed in I Kings 5:5. We must build for God’s name and for His glory. We do not build to make our own names great. God gets the glory. We are just His vessels that he chooses to use. We must keep to our purpose and be determined to finish what God directed us to start. Regardless of opposition, time, resources, or the people who support or resist us, we must complete the task that God put in our hearts to do. We must continue to act on God’s Word until we are done.
Purpose helps us stay dedicated to complete the assignment. We must keep the purpose in mind, not losing sight of what God told us to do and why He told us to do it. Why we do what we do is important. We do everything for His name and for His fame. We must never seek a name or fame for ourselves. Do what God tells you to do all for His glory.
