The Danger of Getting Out of Your Own Lane

The Danger of Getting Out of Your Own Lane

O Lord, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me. Psalm 131:1 (English Standard Version, ESV)

We need to stay where God puts us, not trying to do more than God has gifted us to do.

Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself ? Ecclesiastes 7:16 (KJV)

Destroy in this verse in the Hebrew language means to be desolate. We can hurt ourselves when we try to do too much. Pride will push us to exceed our energy or abilities trying to impress or overachieve. Do your reasonable service (Romans 12:1) while doing your best. Doing your best does not mean you become totally exhausted and burnt out. Don’t take on more than God has gifted, called, and designed you to do. Do your best and leave the rest to God.

For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure… II Corinthians 10:14 (KJV)

God never tells us to do more than we can. He may challenge us to do all that we can do and to give the remainder to Him, but He will not tell us to go beyond that.

‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’ Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. Job 42:3 (English Standard Version, ESV)

We can get in over our heads, saying and doing things we shouldn’t. Don’t try to do what you know you cannot do and what God has not called you to do. If you do, you will regret it later.

We must take the humble position and start out low and slow. Then, we let God teach and guide us into what He has for us. As we do, we won’t miss all that God has for us. We’ll be happier, more peaceful, and more fulfilled. We won’t be overburdened and overloaded with a lot of responsibilities that God did not intend for us.

Think of the abbreviation FGH: FOLLOW God, and He will GUIDE you and HELP you to experience and be all that He has for you.

Let your character or moral disposition be free from love of money [including greed, avarice, lust, and craving for earthly possessions] and be satisfied with your present [circumstances and with what you have]; for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!] Hebrews 13:5 (Amplified Bible Classic Edition, AMPC)

God will not let us down if we do our part and no more, allowing Him to be God.
