The Reason for Our Contentment

The Reason for Our Contentment

Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. Philippians 4:11 (KJV)

Contentment, according to the New Combined Dictionary and Concordance, is a state of satisfaction. Vine’s Dictionary says it is self-sufficiency, adequate, needing no assistance, hence content.

Contentment is learned- it isn’t automatic. Our contentment comes from Christ, meaning we find that He is everything, and thus we are satisfied. We don’t allow circumstances to determine our contentment- just Jesus. Circumstances will change but Christ is always the same.

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Hebrews 13:8 (KJV)

Our minds are made up that Christ is our sufficiency. By His grace, He meets our every need. There’s no need to worry for Jesus is faithful. Jesus will never leave or desert us- so we can safely find our contentment in Him and not in things, people, etc.

Let your character or moral disposition be free from love of money [including greed, avarice, lust, and craving for earthly possessions] and be satisfied with your present [circumstances and with what you have]; for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!] Hebrews 13:5 (Amplified Bible Classic Edition, AMPC)

There it is! The reason we can be content. We are content because we have God and God has us. Three times in this verse God says He won’t leave us helpless or forsake us or let us down. So, take God at His Word. Trust that God is who He says He is and He will do what He says He will do.

We can be content in God because He’s got us, and everything’s going to be all right.
