Therapeuo
And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. Matthew 4:23 (KJV)
The word healing is from the Greek word therapeuo. It means to wait on menially, to relieve of disease, to cure, to heal. It carries with it the picture of therapy, or healing that comes through taking steps of faith or corresponding action. Many times when Jesus healed people, He waited on them as a servant, helping them to take corresponding action to demonstrate their faith and complete the healing of their bodies. In other words, many times, when Jesus told someone they were healed, they had to take action for it to manifest.
And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other. Luke 6:10 (KJV)
The man had to take an action. He had to stretch out his hand for it to be healed. Others were told to take up their beds and walk. Many of the healings performed by Jesus involved the sick person doing something to partner with God in their healing.
I have been in many healing meetings where people were healed as they did something to show their faith. I have seen people who could not walk, receive prayer for healing then take staggering, clumsy steps of faith, being supported by others, until they were able to walk across the platform alone. They were healed by the Word of God, and the manifestation came as they took steps. It was therapeuo in action.
And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. Luke 17:12-14 (KJV)
The healing was not instantaneous; it came as they went. When they followed the Lord’s instructions, they were cleansed of leprosy. Jesus often operated through therapeuo. Today, as you believe for healing, know that God can do it right away, or He may heal you progressively as you take corresponding action. As you believe His Word and take steps of faith, expect therapeuo to work for you.
