Songs of Steps

Songs of Steps

In the Psalms, there are 15 psalms, or songs, of ascent. They begin with Psalm 120 and go through Psalm 134. They also call them songs of degrees or songs of steps. I personally like to call them songs of steps. Israel would sing these songs on their way up to Jerusalem to the feasts of the Lord (Leviticus 23).

God gives each of us songs for our journey in life, songs to God that help us keep taking steps. We celebrate God and do not give up or quit going to church, coming together to blend our songs of steps. As believers, we come together to worship Jesus because every step He took toward Calvary, He took for us. If we do not give up, but keep taking steps, we will be led into His very presence where we see Him face-to-face, because I believe He saw our faces when He was on the cross. So, as we journey on, we can sing songs that God gives to us and we can tap into the songs of steps provided for us in the Psalms.

  • Psalm 120: Speaks of whatever we face, if we pray, God will deliver us.

  • Psalm 121: Tells us our hope comes from the Lord.

  • Psalm 122: Pray for the peace of Jerusalem as we come into the house of the Lord.

  • Psalm 123: A song that tells us to look to God.

  • Psalm 124: Reminds us that our God saves.

  • Psalm 125: Tells us the Lord protects.

  • Psalm 126: Says that God will turn things around.

  • Psalm 127: We have to make Jesus our Lord for our work to succeed.

  • Psalm 128: A family Psalm.

  • Psalm 129: Reminds us that when man curses us, God blesses.

  • Psalm 130: A song to wait on the Lord.

  • Psalm 131: A song of hope for the humble person.

  • Psalm 132: A song of rulership (fulfilled through Christ).

  • Psalm 133: A song of unity.

  • A song of continual worship and intercession in God’s house. We are the temple of God and we are to worship and intercede continually.

Singing these songs of ascent, we go higher and higher in God. We’ll walk on the high places. God made us to rule and reign, declaring His kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. We keep taking steps closer to the full manifestation of the Kingdom as we praise the Lord according to Psalm 149.

Praise ye the Lord. Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints. Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King. Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp. For the Lord taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation. Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand; To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people; To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the Lord. Psalm 149: 1-9 (KJV)

As we do as Psalm 149 says, justice is executed upon the nations (heathen) and a sentence (punishments) is decreed upon the people. We will bring God’s justice to earth and bring down evildoers. The wicked in authority will be bound and their evil works will be stopped. The sentence of judgment will be enforced (executed) by us- both on wicked people and evil spirits- by the words we speak and our praise to the Most High God.

As we takes steps of praise to God, we will experience life as God had planned and intended all along. So, keep taking steps and singing songs to God on your journey.
