What Shall I Do?

And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me. And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do. Acts 22:9-10 (KJV)

This is a portion of Paul’s testimony, when he encountered Jesus. Paul saw and heard Jesus, and asked, “What shall I do, Lord?” When we experience Jesus’ presence and hear His voice, we should also ask Him, “What shall I do?”

Jesus tells us four steps, or points of action, to take:

Arise

Don’t just sit on your encounter with Jesus. Take action. Do what Jesus tells you to do. Don’t doubt it; step out on it.

Go

Get moving. Go where Jesus tells you to go.

Be Told

Jesus told him to first arise and go, then he would be told. You’ll receive further instruction once you have done what He has already told you to do. If you feel stuck and can’t hear God, act upon the last instructions He gave you. Then, more will follow.

Do

When you receive further instructions, you’ll know what to do. Then do it.

Jesus leads line upon line, step by step. As we arise, go, are told, then do, we fulfill the spoken words of Jesus. It is interesting that there are four steps. In Bible numerology four represents the four corners of the world, or the world. Often, what we are to do impacts the world, just as Paul did.

Paul did all that Jesus told him to do. He ran his race and finished his course. Then he graduated to heaven. As we do these steps, we, too, can run our race, finish our course and hear these words from Jesus, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
