Jesus, the Theme of the Gospel of John

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not…. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:1-5, 14 (KJV)

The entire Gospel of John speaks of who Jesus is. Jesus is revealed in every chapter.

John 1

Jesus is revealed as Creator God, Who always is and Who came down to tabernacle, or dwell, among us.

John 2

Jesus is shown as the Miracle-worker who is the same always (Hebrews 13:8).

John 3

This shows us Jesus as Savior. Salvation is only available through the Son and being born again.

John 4

Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed One. He is the New Birth. He is the Giver of living water. We can drink from Jesus and we are satisfied.

John 5

Jesus is revealed as the Healer, the One who makes us whole.

John 6

Jesus said, “I am the Bread of Life.” As we believe on Him, we eat His flesh and drink His blood, partaking of who He is and what He has done for us.

John 7

Jesus is shown as the Feast of Tabernacles. Jesus dwells in us and among us. We’re safe and never alone.

John 8

Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world.” He is the light of life. He gives us light and life. We are to live in the light and life of Jesus.

John 9

In this chapter, Jesus gave physical sight to a blind man to show us that He gives sight to those who are blind, both physically and spiritually. We have sight to see Jesus.

John 10

Jesus is the Good Shepherd. He leads, guides, protects, and provides for us.

John 11

Jesus said, “I am the Resurrection and the Life.” He raised Lazarus. All who call on Him experience resurrection life.

John 12

Jesus is worthy of worship because He is God. Mary worshiped Jesus. The crowd cried Hosanna, which means “I save,” and is an exclamation of praise. Now we worship Jesus who is worthy of it all!

John 13

Jesus is the Son who serves to save us, ultimately giving His life for all mankind.

John 14

Jesus is shown as the only way to the Father and as the Sender of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “I am THE Way, the Truth, and the Life- not A Way. Through Him, we know God, fellowship with Him and have relationship with Him. Jesus gave us access to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

John 15

Jesus is the Vine. In him we live and bear fruit, thus glorifying God.

John 16

Jesus is the Word who speaks God’s Word to us, even also by Holy Spirit. He is the One who overcame so we can overcome.

John 17

Jesus is revealed as our Intercessor, the One who prays for us.

John 18

Jesus is our Rescuer. He is shown as the One who was tried so we can overcome trials.

John 19

Jesus is our Redeemer, the one who took our place and paid the price to redeem us.

John 20

Jesus is the Resurrection that guarantees our resurrection.

John 21

Jesus is the Restorer. He appears to us so we can be restored to fellowship with God. We can know, hear, and be in relationship with Jesus.

John showed us Jesus; the Creator who created all things and Who came to save us and live in His Creation so we can know God again. John, who had a close intimate relationship with Jesus, shows us who Jesus is, so we too can have such a relationship.
