Decoding the Genealogy of Jesus
We see the genealogy of Jesus in Luke 3:21-38. He was descended of:
God- Deity
Joseph- Humanity
David- Messiahship
God= Deity
Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased…. Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God. Luke 3:21-22, 38 (KJV)
These verses tell us that Jesus’ geneaology was from God. Jesus came from God and is God, This is why God called Him His Beloved Son. Jesus as the Son of God speaks of His deity.
Joseph= Humanity
And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli, Luke 3:23 (KJV)
Like Luke does here, Matthew traces Jesus genealogy through Joseph. Although Joseph was not the biological father of Jesus, both men record his genealogy through his adopted father. Luke includes the words as was supposed to show that Joseph was considered his legal earthly father in the eyes of men. Jesus being the Son of Man speaks of His humanity. Jesus was brought up in the same way that ordinary people in the lineage of humanity were raised.
David= Messiahship
Which was the son of Melea, which was the son of Menan, which was the son of Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David, Luke 3:21 (KJV)
This portion of Jesus’ genealogy includes King David. The Messiah was to be a descendent of David. Jesus was of the line of King David, pointing to Him as the anointed Messiah. Christ means the anointed one and his anointing. Jesus Christ, being anointed, would have an anointed supernatural ministry, full of the Holy Spirit and power (Luke 4:18-19).
Jesus as the Son of God speaks of His deity. As the son of Joseph, it speaks of His humanity. As the Son of David, it speaks of Jesus’ messiahship. Jesus’ genealogy proves that He is who God declared Him to be. The Son of God came to earth as a human anointed by God to save all who call on Jesus Christ as Lord.
