Feed On, Be Filled With
But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. John 4:14 (KJV)
Drinking of this water refers to receiving Christ as Savior. We continue to drink as we continue to make Him Lord of our lives. It must be a continual drinking, a taking in of the water of life daily. And we feed on God’s Word everyday as well (Matthew 4:4). As we do this, we take in the spiritual life of God, even God Himself.
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Ephesians 5:18 (KJV)
Be filled with the Spirit could more accurately be translated be being filled with the Spirit. It speaks of a continual filling of God’s Spirit through prayer, the Word, worship, and spending time in His presence to receive from Him. Thus, we drink of the River of Life.
He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) John 7:38-39 (KJV)
Through Scripture, we can be filled with Holy Spirit daily, meaning that when we drink of God’s Word, we drink of His Spirit too.
In John 4:14 above, we read of a well of water that produces eternal life. That well is the well of salvation that we drink of at the point of salvation. In John 7:38, rivers of living water are mentioned, which speaks of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, which happens once we have been saved. Both speak of the life that Holy Spirit gives us.
So, we are to feed on God’s Word daily and we are to be filled with the Spirit daily. This provides an everlasting source of life, wells of salvation, living waters that will never run dry.
The Spirit gives the Word. As we feed on God’s Word, we partake of our salvation. As we feed on the Word and pray, worship, and seek God, we are filled again and again with the Holy Spirit. It is a divine cycle. So, we are fed and filled with God’s Word and His Spirit, making us satisfied daily. We won’t hunger or thirst because God alone satisfies.
