Our National Covenant

Our National Covenant

Over 400 years ago, the Pilgrims landed here and established a covenant between this nation and God. They had left Europe to establish a nation where men and women could worship the Lord freely, and they made a covenant with God dedicating this nation to Him. While many would say that this is not a Christian nation, we are indeed dedicated and set apart for the Lord God Almighty. And such a covenant has provided us with rich blessings and unparalleled liberty. It is our covenant heritage that has ensured our victory on the battlefield and in the affairs of the nations. We call this phenomenon American exceptionalism, but in truth it is the result of the blessing of God. If it were not for the dedication of this nation to God, we likely would have gone the way of other nations, which do not have a consistent form of government and the stability we have known.

Let’s read the document that started it all- the Mayflower Compact. It is significant in that it combined faith in God and the establishment of government.

In the name of God, Amen. We whose names are under-written, the loyal subjects of our dread sovereign Lord, King James, by the grace of God, of Great Britain, France, and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith, etc.

Having undertaken,
for the glory of God, and advancement of the Christian faith, and honor of our King and Country, a voyage to plant the first colony in the northern parts of Virginia, do by these presents solemnly and mutually, in the presence of God, and one of another, covenant and combine our selves together into a civil body politic, for our better ordering and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid; and by virtue hereof to enact, constitute, and frame such just and equal laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions and offices, from time to time, as shall be thought most meet and convenient for the general good of the Colony, unto which we promise all due submission and obedience. In witness whereof we have hereunder subscribed our names at Cape Cod, the eleventh of November, in the year of the reign of our sovereign lord, King James, of England, France, and Ireland, the eighteenth, and of Scotland the fifty-fourth.

Anno Dom. 1620.

Let us never forget our godly foundation, and let’s dedicate ourselves anew to our national motto, In God We Trust.
