Stones From The Book

Then he took his staff in his hand; and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag, in a pouch which he had, and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine…. Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.” So it was, when the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, that David hurried and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. Then David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone; and he slung it and struck the Philistine in his forehead, so that the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. But there was no sword in the hand of David. I Samuel 17:40, 45-50 (NKJV)

David did not defeat the giant Goliath with manmade weapons. He chose something made by God Himself- a stone. To defeat an enemy the size of Goliath, a weapon made by man would not be sufficient.

Much has been said about the fact that David chose five smooth stones. It has been noted that Goliath had four brothers and that David chose one stone to take down each of the five brothers. This could very well be true. David was trusting in God for the victory, and he expected to defeat them all. To me, a more important point is that he chose something that was not fashioned by man’s hands. A stone from the brook was created by God, meaning that God would get the credit for the victory, and not weapons or ammunition crafted by humans.

Did you notice that David did not have to even get close to Goliath to defeat him? Typically, warfare of the day was often full of hand-to-hand combat; each man pitting his strength and ability against another. By using the stone made by God, David let the stone do the work for him. It had little to do with David’s strength or ability.

We, too, have weapons made by God and not by man. Our weapons are Scripture verses. As we run to confront the enemy, we can hold onto a verse instead of a stone. And when we throw that verse at the enemy with confidence, it will take him down. We won’t have to fight in our own strength.

Are you fighting a giant of sickness? Hit him with Scriptures on healing. Are you confronting a giant of lack? Throw verses about provision and abundance at him. Is a giant of fear coming against you? Attack him with verses about courage and protection. For every giant, there are Scripture stones to give you the victory. However, it is up to you to select those Scripture stones and to throw them. You have to get in the Bible and choose the stones that God shows you. Wade into the brook of God’s Word and search for exactly the right ones. Your stones come from the Book instead of the brook.

Faith is the force that gives your stone the velocity and momentum to hit that giant with maximum impact. The Holy Spirit will guide your stone so it hits the giant right between the eyes. So, you just need to grab your stone and throw. Aim your Scripture stone at the enemy and watch him fall before your very eyes.
