Prophetic Utterance

And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. Luke 1:59-60 (KJV)

John the Baptist was circumcised on the eighth day. Circumcision speaks of our flesh being cut away. The number eight refers to new beginnings. With God’s help, we cut away our flesh to make room for the new. Circumcision also speaks of cutting a covenant. God did this with Abraham and Isaac his son. Abraham means Father of many nations, while Isaac means laughter. Through God’s covenant in Christ, we can laugh because of what God does for us. If we read further in Luke 1, we’ll see a prophecy we can proclaim over ourselves.

And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, Luke 1:67 (KJV)

As we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we can prophesy by speaking or singing, as Ephesians 5:18-19 tells us. We can prophesy God’s Word because it is a prophetic utterance spoken from God to us.

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: Luke 1:68-70 (KJV)

Gid has spoken to us by prophets throughout the ages, prophesying about the Messiah, Jesus. God is still speaking to us today.

That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; Luke 1:71 (KJV)

We can speak forth our protection from anyone who would come against us.

To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; Luke 1:72 (KJV)

God will give us the mercy He has promised, His everlasting love to us. The phrase remember His holy covenant means God is always keeping His covenant with us. God is a covenant keeper. He honors His Word to us.

The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, Luke 1:73 (KJV)

The oath is speaking of the Abrahamic covenant, which we can claim. This verse reminds us that we are Abraham’s offspring and heirs.

That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, Luke 1:74 (KJV)

God has delivered us, and we can live without fear. No fear here!

In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. Luke 1:75 (KJV)

We will serve God in holiness, meaning pure and separate from sin. We will serve Him in righteousness, or in right standing with God. We will do this all our days!

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, Luke 1:76-77 (KJV)

Although this was originally spoken to John the Baptist to prepare the way for Christ and His earthly ministry, we too can prepare the way for others to know Christ. We can share the good news of salvation and forgiveness from sin by Jesus Christ.

Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, Luke 1:78 (KJV)

Salvation has been provided because of God’s tender mercy. God is compassionate towards us. Dayspring means the rising of the sun, pointing to Jesus. Jesus has visited and does visit us. Don’t miss His invitation to visitation.

To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1:79 (KJV)

Jesus is the Light and gives light and life to us. He guides us with peace. He is our peace.

Through prophetic utterance, we can speak this prophetic word over our own lives, based on the written Word of God. I encourage you to find other passages of Scripture that you can proclaim over yourself and claim for your own life.
