The Season of Love
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. John 3:16-17 (KJV)
Except for Christianity, all belief systems are based on mankind working its way to God. Christianity is the only faith that relies on what God has done for mankind instead of what mankind must do for God. What motivated God to give His only Son to pay the price for mankind’s sin? It was love, because God is love (I John 4:8).
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Romans 3:23 (NLT)
There is no way that man can work his way to God because God’s standard is perfection, and sinful man can never attain perfection on his own. So, God had to come in the form of a man and do what we could not do for ourselves. That is the love of God in action. That is His nature. It is what He does. Love gives. He is love, and He is in the business of saving people.
As we celebrate this Christmas, let’s make it about what matters. Let’s make it about love- the love of God towards us, our love for Him, and our love for one another. It can be easy to get swept up in the preparations and busyness that seems to take over at this time. Instead, let’s stop and consider the origins of this season. Let’s think about the events that had to occur for us to be redeemed and made right with God. Let’s turn our thoughts and hearts towards the Baby in a manger; a Baby who changed the course of human history. Let’s remember and be thankful for the God who is love and Who loves us. Let’s make it a season focused on the Lord Jesus. Let’s make it a season of Love.
