Using The Word As A Sword

And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I have hoped in thy judgments. Psalm 119:43 (KJV)

The Hebrew word for word is debar, which means a matter, thing, word, or speech. Psalm 149 speaks of a two-edged sword that we are to wield, which is the spoken Word of God.

And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him, and said unto him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour. Judges 6:12 (KJV)

The Midianites were terrorizing and raiding the Israelites. God appeared to Gideon and called him a mighty man of valor. The NIV renders it as a mighty warrior and the NLT translates it as a mighty hero. Regardless, God was speaking a word to Gideon, but Gideon had to get in agreement with God and say what God said about him in order to see it come to pass.

And the Lord said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place…. And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host…. When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon. Judges 7:7, 14, 18 (KJV)

The sword of the Lord and of Gideon speaks of one sword wielded by them both. When God speaks His Word, it is a one-edged sword. When we speak in agreement with what God has said, it becomes a two-edged sword.

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)

The Word twoedged in the Greek comes from two root words that mean the mouth, or the edge. Therefore, it can be translated as the two-mouthed sword or the two-edged sword. It is the sword which Ephesians 6:18 calls the sword of the Spirit. As we speak God’s Word, quickened to us by the Holy Spirit, it is a rhema word (spoken word) to defeat the enemy.

But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4 (KJV)

Jesus spoke the words He got from God. It was the written Word, and when spoken forth in the power of the Holy Spirit, it became the sword of the Spirit.

Consider Gideon. If he had not spoken what God had said, he wouldn’t have defeated the enemy. As we get a word from God’s Word by the Holy Spirit, we can speak it forth. It then becomes a rhema word, a spoken word that is alive with power. It becomes a weapon against the enemy.

Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds. Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand; To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people; To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the Lord. Psalm 149:5-9 (KJV) emphasis mine

The two-edged sowrd is God’s spoken Word. One edge is spoken by God. The second edge is spoken by us as we say what He says. Just as Jesus defeated the devil by speaking God’s Word, we too will defeat the devil with the two-edged sword. When we get in agreement with God and speak His Word, we will see Him bring us the victory over every attack of the enemy. We’ll triumph over the enemy every time, praising God all the way.
