Who Can You Trust?

It can be discouraging when we deal with other people. So many of them let us down, deceive us, betray us. It can be tempting to shut ourselves off from people just so we don’t get hurt. We often find ourselves asking, “Who can you trust?”

The truth is that man, in and of himself, is not trustworthy. We find that people, especially those who are not born-again, do not live with integrity or honor. Even sadder, we also find that a great many Christians do not operate that way either. So, once again, we find ourselves asking who we can actually trust.

In God, whose word I praise, In God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? Psalm 56:4 (New American Standard Bible, NASB)

Yes, it is true that people are not perfect. They will let us down and bring us disappointment. Yes, men and women will do things that we do not like. They will break their word. They will lie, They will steal and act selfishly. Even good people who love us will fall short of our expectations. Only God is perfect and infallible. God and God alone can be trusted at all times and in every way. God is totally good and will do us only good. It can be painful when people disappoint us by their actions and attitudes, but we have to keep the right perspective by knowing that there is one Person we can always count on. The Lord, the One true, perfect, trustworthy God, is on our side, and we can put our trust in Him. He will not disappoint us. When people act without honor, console yourself with the knowledge that God will never break your trust.
