The Meaning of Life

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. Ecclesiastes 12:13 (KJV)

You may have had it all and lost it. Or you may have come to a place where life doesn’t seem to have much meaning. Or maybe you’ve been going through trials for a long time. Regardless of your specific circumstances, you may be asking yourself, “Is this all there is to life?”

When we feel like giving up or wonder if it is worth it to serve God, we must take to heart the Scriptures that tell us to fear God- or to respect, honor, revere, and worship Him. When we put God first and live for Him and not ourselves, life takes on real meaning. Live to please God and not sinful desires. It is okay to have desires, but we must make sure our desires are from God and for God.

When we fear God and shun a sinful lifestyle, doing what’s right even when it is hard and everyone else is going the other way, God takes note of it. Remember: do right and God will make things right. He will fill us with love, joy, peace, etc. even when pain, trouble, and problems surround us. As we abide in God’s Word and put it first place and final authority, we will be satisfied and strengthened to overcome sin, sickness, and sorrow. As we worship God and stay in His presence, He will come to our aid and do what only He can do. Thus, we experience God in a real and profound way.

Living close to God gives life meaning and purpose and we will find fulfillment, making life worth living. In finding God, we find all we’ve been looking for. God is life, and life comes from Him. He gives life meaning when He becomes our life.

And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, To keep the commandments of the Lord, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good? Deuteronomy 10:12-13 (KJV)

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. Matthew 22:37 (KJV)

What’s it all about? What is the meaning of life? What is the whole duty, or purpose, of man? Why were you born? The answer is simple, so simple that many miss it or refuse to accept it. Fear God and keep His commandments by knowing God and loving Him with your whole heart, soul, mind, and strength. When we find God, we find the meaning of life.

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Micah 6:8 (KJV)
