Knowing God as Our Father

Knowing God as Our Father

God is not just our Creator, but He is also our Father. Let’s explore this concept of God the Creator and Master of all things being our devoted, loving Father.

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Matthew 6:9 (KJV)

Father in this verse is the Greek word Pater, which is a root word that signifies a nourisher, protector, upholder. Metaforically it means the originator of a family. It is the relationship of God with those who are born-again. He is our heavenly Father.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: John 1:12 (KJV)

To those who are born again, God is our spiritual Father because we are born of His Spirit (John 3:6). We are born again by His Word, or His seed (I Peter 1:23). He is the Father of spirits (Hebrew 12:9), and of course, He is the Father of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:17, Matthew 3:17).

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. Romans 8:16-17 (KJV)

This verse gives us assurance that God is our Father and we are His children. Therefore, we inherit all God and Jesus have. If we read Matthew 6:24-34, we are reminded that we do not have to worry about our lives because we have a heavenly Father who cares about us and will care for us.

To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.. Galatians 4:5-6 (KJV)

We’ve been redeemed, or purchased and bought back. As a result, we receive the adoption of sons, or the full rights and privileges of sonship. Because we are the sons (and this term includes females as well) of God, He sent the Spirit of His Son in our hearts, revealing to us the relationship we have with God as our Abba. Abba is an Aramaic word that means dear Father. So, from this verse, we see that we come from God, we belong to God, and we are heirs of God. He is the Father and we are His children.

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. Genesis 1:28 (KJV)

The Father thinks good thoughts about His children (Psalm 139:17-18) and He blesses them. He speaks only good over us. The blessing promises love, acceptance, prosperity, wholeness and so much more. We have the Father’s spoken blessing, which empowers us to prosper and rule in life.

God truly is our Father. He loves us, cares for us, is always with us, never hurts us, but is for us. He protects us, nourishes us, upholds us, teaches, guides, corrects, defends, helps, trains, and heals us. We are His family. We are where we belong. We have a place with God our Father. As we spend time with Him, we know Him more and more. He gave us Jesus so we know He will give us all things needed to enjoy life anf live godly. We can love, worship, and trust Him. God our Father can be our closest Friend if we will simply draw near to Him.
