Difficult Questions: Did Angels Really Have Sex With Women?
From time to time, we dig into Scripture and seek answers to difficult questions from the Bible. Today, we are asking the question: “Did angels really have sex with women?”
Yes, I believe angels had intercourse with women because the Bible indicates that they did. This is something that defies human logic, but no matter what our logical minds tell us, we must always choose to believe the truth of God’s Word. Even if we hear something from the Holy Spirit, if it does not align with the Word of God, then it is not the Holy Sprit speaking to us. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth and will not lead us into error, but will lead us into all truth.
Let’s look at the verses that point to this happening and discuss some of the arguments people try to use against each one. This is going to be a lengthy post, because there is a lot to unpack with this topic.
And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. Genesis 6:1-4 (KJV) emphasis mine
This tells us that giants were the offspring that resulted from the “Sons of God” having intercourse with the daughters of men. Just the fact that one group is noted as the sons OF GOD and the women were noted as being daughters OF MEN, shows us that there is a difference between their origins. But, let’s go beyond that to examine the use of the phrase “sons of God.” In the New Testament, this essentially refers to those who have accepted Jesus as their Savior and have become sons (and daughters) of God. When we get saved, we are born into the family of God. However, this event is mentioned in the Old Testament, meaning it happened before Jesus had come to earth to redeem us. Therefore, in this case, the “sons of God” cannot refer to born-again Christians, because no one had yet been born again. So, let’s look at the use of “sons of God’ in the Old Testament and the Septuagint.
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them. Job 1:6 (KJV) emphasis mine
Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Lord. Job 2:1 (KJV) emphasis mine
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Job 38:4-7 (emphasis mine)
These are the three other Old Testament verses in which the King James Version uses the phrase “Sons of God” In each of these, the “sons of God” refers to angels. In the verses from Job 1 and 2 above, there is no way this can refer to humans, because the Bible does not mention humans presenting themselves to the Lord in this manner. Plus satan was counted among them, meaning they were angelic beings. In addition, humans were not present at creation as referenced in Job 38:4-7.
Also, if we look in the Septuagint, which is the Greek translation of the Old Testament, which was the version of the Bible used in Jesus’ day, in the places where the King James Version calls them “sons of God” the Septuagint calls them “angels.”
And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Jude 1:6 (KJV)
The Book of Jude, in the New Testament confirms this event really happened. Jude was the half-brother of Jesus and he said that this event involved angels. To make sure it is speaking of the same event, let’s look at what the original Greek language tells us.
Kept not is me teresantas meaning to not watchfully protect something. They did not watchfully protect, or guard, their first estate. First estate in the Greek. is ten heauton archen. It means an ancient place of rulership. These angels had been assigned ancient places of rulership by God. They left those habitations. Left is apoleipo, which means to abandon or forsake. They abandoned their posts, or habitation. Habitation is oiketerion, meaning a dwelling place or abode. They forsook the place where each of them was assigned by God to dwell. This reinforces that angels did not guard their post, but left where they were supposed to be, disobeying God. This supots the event mentoned in Genesis 6. These angels have a special punishment. They are in everlasting chains in total darkness until the day they are judged for what they did.
Let’s ask ourselves an additional question. Can angels really become flesh and be capable of impregnating human women? The Bible tells us that angels can take physical human form and interact with other people as humans do. Abraham interacted with God and two angels in Genesis 18. The two angels ate food and then as the Lord remained to speak with Abraham, they continued towards Sodom. In Genesis 19, when the angels entered Sodom, they appeared to the citizens as men. we know this because the men of Sodom wanted to have homosexual intercourse with them. These angels ate with Lot in his house, and when they rescued Lot and his family, they physically grabbed Lot and his wife by the hand.
And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the Lord being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city. Genesis 19:15-16 (KJV)
This points to angels in human form. We also see that angels ministered to Jesus after he had fasted 40 days and nights in the wilderness. These angels would have brought water and other necessities for Jesus to break his fast- meaning they came in physical form to minister to his physical needs.
Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungered…. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. Genesis 4:1-2, 11 (KJV)
We must not forget the power of lust. When angels saw beautiful women and saw that when men had sex with them, it was pleasurable, they allowed their minds to lust after them. This led them to act on their lustful thoughts and rebel against God. Angels do have the choice whether to obey or disobey God. However, they are not made in the image of God, and Jesus did not die for them, so they cannot be redeemed. As a result of their rebellion it was not humans who were birthed from this intercourse, but mutated hybrid-type beings that were exceptionally large.
So, although it astonishes the human mind to think that this could and did happen, I believe the Scriptures show us that angels had sex with women.
