Study God's Word
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. II Timothy 2:15 (KJV)
This verse is not a suggestion, but it is worded as a command. As believers, we must learn to follow orders from God. God has given us His written Word and the Holy Spirit so we can study the Bible and grow.
Study is the Greek word spoudazo. It means to hasten a thing, exerting oneself and making effort. It speaks of being prompt, and earnest, making every effort to do one’s best. He refers to us a workmen. Real study will take work on our part. We must not, we cannot, be lazy in our approach to studying God’s Word. There is too much at stake- namely our souls.
We won’t be ashamed if we rightly divide, or accurately handle, God’s word. Divide in Greek is orthotomeo, which means to cut straight, rightly dealing with a thing and refers to teaching Scripture accurately. The workman has studied correctly and diligently, dealing rightly with Scripture. He or she is one who is clear in God’s Word, learning and teaching it so others understand and can apply the Scriptures to their lives. Rightly dividing means to correctly handle God’s Word based on correct study.
A good Bible translation is a must to study well. There are a number of good translations out. I have personally found the King James Version (KJV), the New King James Version (NKJV), and the New Living Translation (NLT) all to be good, and I also enjoy using the Amplified Bible Classic Edition (AMPC). In addition, a Strong’s Concordance is a valuable resource to help you dig out the true meaning and origin of words in the Bible. If you can only afford a couple resources, this is definitely one you need to get. Also, there are free online resources. For example, Biblegateway.com is a great place to read multiple Bible versions, translations, and paraphrases. A word of caution: be careful how you use a paraphrase version as it is based on someone’s interpretation of the Scripture says, not necessarily on the actual word meanings. While they can be helpful in supplementing your study, do not use a paraphrase as your primary Bible.
When studying, do not pull a verse out of its setting, taking it out of context. This is how doctrinal error can begin. Read it in the context of its rightful setting in Scripture.
When studying a subject in the Bible, doing what we call a topical study, find as many verses on your subject as you can to stay balanced. Remember- Scripture will interpret itself- either by cross-referencing other verses or by looking at the context. The Bible is the best interpreter of the Bible.
There are many tools and resources for Bible study. Let the Holy Spirit guide you as He leads you into all truth. After all, He is the best Teacher.
