Highest Callings- Part 2
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God… I John 3:1 (KJV)
If we were to ask Christians to name the highest callings, some would list prayer, worship, soul sinning, and helping the poor. These are all very good, and they have their place. For example, we will worship God for all eternity, yet I wouldn’t consider it among the highest callings. These things can be part of the highest callings, but not on their own.
Yesterday, we saw that the first calling is to recognize we have a heavenly Father. The second one is intertwined with the first one, and it is to be called His children. God calls us His sons and daughters- His family. So the second calling is to be a child of God.
What a privilege that God calls us His children. This calling involves our response and interaction with God. God can be called our Father, yet we may not fellowship with Him. As sons of God, we can come freely and boldly into His presence to love Him, and worship Him. We can fellowship with our Father besaed on our relationship with Him, and not based on our performance.
As children, we can cry, “Abba Father” by His Spirit in us. God cries for fellowship with us, and we can cry for fellowship with Him. As we fellowship with God, we are walking out the second highest calling as sons of God. And when we refer to sons of God, this applies to both male and female believers.
As God’s child, let Him love you. Then, in turn, you love Him back. He touches us so we can touch Him. We can hear and know Him as a son knows his father. We are called BY God FOR God. As a son, spend time with your heavenly Father to know Him intimately. You don’t have to have it all together to come to God. Just come to Him as you are and your Father will love you just the way you are. Wow- talk about total freedom!
When you know God is your Father and you are His child, you will be happy, free, and satisfied. Other people may fail, but you have a heavenly Father who will always take care of His children. So, come near and enjoy Him as your Father. That is our second highest calling.
