Some People Just Won't Get You
Then the multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread. But when His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, “He is out of His mind.” And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebub,” and, “By the ruler of the demons He casts out demons.” Mark 3:20-22 (NKJV)
When we step out to do what God has called and empowered us to do, some people just won’t get us. Jesus is a great example of this. In Chapters 1 and 2 of Mark’s Gospel, is an account of Jesus beginning His ministry. The following things are noted in these chapters.
Jesus was baptized in the Holy Spirit, overcame satan in the wilderness, and called His disciples. He cast out devils and healed the sick. He preached in Galilee. He cleansed a leper who discovered that it was Jesus’ will to heal (and it still is now). He healed a man of palsy, who then arose and walked. Jesus called Matthew the tax collector (He’s still calling rich and poor alike to follow Him). He taught on fasting.
Jesus taught about the sabbath being a day of rest, but that He was Lord of the Sabbath. That one really bugged the religious leaders, so let’s discuss it for a moment. Jesus is Lord of the sabbath because He made it. He can heal on the sabbath to bring rest to the hurting. Jesus restored a man’s withered hand in Mark 3:5 to wholeness. Restoration brings wholeness, with nothing missing and nothing broken. That is included in salvation.
Also in Mark 3, Jesus appointed 12 disciples to preach, heal, and cast out devils (He tells us to do the same today). Consider all the good and righteous things Jesus did just during two and half chapters. Then we read about Jesus’ own people, which is referring to His family. They heard of His works and came to take Him away because they thought He was out of His mind! How discouraging that could have been. Then the religious group accused Him of having a devil, or being possessed and ruled by satan. If there was ever anyone who was misunderstood, it was Jesus. Yet, Jesus just kept following His Father.
Even when others don’t get you- and if you’re following God’s call many won’t get you- just be free to be yourself and obey the Lord. You can’t allow family or foes or finances or friction or fatigue stop you. Keep walking with Jesus. Keep working for God. Others will come to recognize the wonderful works of God flowing through you and they will worship Him.
