According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it. And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof…. And thou shalt make a mercy seat of pure gold: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof…. And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee. And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel. Exodus 25:9-10, 17, 21-22 (KJV)
God told Moses to make an ark, or a box, overlaid with pure gold, and with a gold lid on top as a cover. The lid was called the Mercy Seat, or the Atonement Cover. There, God would meet and speak with Moses.
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16 (KJV)
God’s throne is the Mercy Seat. The ark was a type or picture of God’s throne. Jesus appeared with His blood before God at the Mercy Seat in heaven and applied His blood to the Mercy Seat. Thus, Jesus made eternal atonement for us in earth and in heaven. Atonement means to cover. Christ, Who is our Redeemer, redeemed us with His blood. We’re covered. Now we have free access to God and His throne to meet with God to fellowship with Him. We can hear Him speak His heart to us, sharing His Word, His plans, and His desires for us.
We have a better covenant than they did in the Old Testament because the New Testament is built on a better sacrifice- Jesus on the cross. This established better promises where we can come boldly, freely, unashamed, and without fear to God.
We can meet Him at His throne. As there were two cherubim at each end of the Mercy Seat looking down in worship, there are angels all around God’s throne in awe and worship. we too worship at God’s throne in holy awe. We worship God and Jesus for Jesus made the way for us to come into the throne room into God’s presence. Now, there is nothing keeping us from meeting with God to fellowship and exchange each other’s hearts and love.
Truly, this is a new day. We get to know God, to feel His love and presence, to hear His Word, and know His voice as He leads us closer to Himself and deeper into His heart. We can behold the Father, Son, and Spirit in their glory. We can come directly to the God of glory, the Lord of glory, and the Spirit of glory. Life can now be a continual encounter with the Trinity, living in God’s presence now and forever.
