Returning to the Garden

And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. Genesis 3:8 (KJV) emphasis mine

Have you ever wondered why God walked in the Garden of Eden in the cool of the day? After all, He’s God and temperature should have no effect on Him. What if “the cool of the day” is not what we always thought it was?

The Hebrew word for cool is ruwach. This is very interesting because ruwach is the Hebrew word for the Spirit of God. It means wind, Spirit, breeze, or it can actually be translated cool. So, the King James translators weren’t entirely wrong, but I believe it means more than the fact the God walked in the garden in the part of the day that was cool and breezy. I believe His presence is what caused it to be breezy.

Lord God is Yahweh Elohim. Yahweh is Lord, or Jehovah, or I Am. Elohim is a plural name referring to the Trinity, the three-in-one God. The great I Am, Jehovah, the One who will be whatever we need Him to be, walked in the garden. And it wasn’t just one of the Godhead, it was the fullness of the Godhead- all three members of the Trinity- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

So, the Trinity walked in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve had opportunity to commune with the Father, The Son (also known as the Word), and the Holy Spirit. The Lord God walked in the cool of the day, or the breeze, the Spirit wind. The Garden of Eden was not your ordinary, everyday, run-of-the-mill garden. It was a supernatural place. The breeze that blew was a natural wind, but it was also spiritual, full of God’s presence.

Adam and Eve lived a supernatural, miraculous existence before the fall. The garden was a perfect place and mankind had not been separated from God’s presence and His amazing ways. Imagine what it must have been like with no sickness, no pain, no fear, no regret, nothing negative to ruin the beauty of the place.

That was in the distant past. However, as Christians, we are returning to the Garden. Even now, we can walk with God in His spiritual breeze and presence. We can experience the wind of the Holy Spirit. We can walk free from sickness and pain by faith. We have returned to the Garden spiritually. We are progressively returning to the Garden in our souls as we are transformed and renewed by God’s Word and Spirit. And eventually, our bodies will return to the Garden physically when we are raptured and our bodies are transformed into glorified bodies.

Returning to the Garden means we are headed back to the peaceful, perfect existence once known by mankind before the fall. Eternity will be beautiful, but we can begin to experience the Garden here and now.
