God Cannot Lie

God Cannot Lie

In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; Titus 1:2 (KJV)

God is the Greek word Theos, which encompasses God and everything that makes Him God. For example, He is all-powerful, eternal, self-existent and self-sustaining. It speaks of all of God’s divine attributes, like being all-knowing, holy, righteous, faithful, just, good, loving, and so on.

The Bible says that God is unable to lie, but why? Simply because it doesn’t fit with who He is. It is not in His nature to lie. If He could lie, He would not be holy, righteous, faithful, just, good, etc. It isn’t just that God won’t lie, which He wouldn’t, but He actually cannot lie. It isn’t possible. There is no untruth in Him. He is the truth. A lie cannot exist in truth. He is not a man that can lie, but He is the one true God who cannot lie because it isn’t in His nature to do so. It isn’t who He is.

That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Hebrews 6:18 (KJV)

This tells us very clearly that it is impossible for God to lie. If He lied, He wouldn’t be God- instead He would be a child of satan since the devil is a liar and the father of lies. There is no lie in God- only truth. God is the God of truth. Jesus is the Truth. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth. Therefore, when God the Trinity, whether individually or corporately, says something, it is true and will come to pass.

For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself, Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife. Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Hebrews 6:13-18 (KJV)

Why did God swear by Himself? Because there was no one greater and no one else who is absolute truth. He promises blessing, so if we wait it out He will bring it about. Men may make promises but how much more of a guarantee do we have when God promises us something! He always makes good on His promises because He cannot lie. We have a strong consolation, or hope, in this. Hope in Greek is the word elpis, which describes the happy anticipation of good. it is favorable and confident expectation. In other words, God won’t let us down. if God promised it, He will do it. He is good and true and will follow through.

Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Hebrews 6:19-20 (KJV)

This hope, this expectation that God will make good on all His promises, is an anchor to hold us together in our time of waiting, until we see the manifestation. He cannot lie, so wait it out. You can count on God because He is not a liar and He cannot lie. Every word He has ever spoken and will ever speak is true. He is the truth, and He is trustworthy, so believe Him and see it come to pass.
