Like David

And David spake unto the Lord the words of this song in the day that the Lord had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul: And he said, The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. I will call on the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. II Samuel 22:1-4 (KJV)

There are many similarities between King David and New Testament believers that many of us may not have considered.

David was s shepherd boy who tended sheep. As believers, we are all called to disciple others. We are all shepherds of someone: ourselves, our families, our coworkers, our ministries- whatever and whoever God entrusts us with. We are to watch over them well- leading, feeding, teaching and being a good example.

David was overlooked by man, but not by God. When others don’t notice us, God does, and God will put us where He wants us. David was faithful over a little and God made him ruler over much. As we are faithful with what we currently have, God will give us more.

David was called and anointed as king. David ruled over Israel, God’s people, and over his enemies. The New Testament says God has called us and anointed us, making us kings unto Him. We are to rule and reign in this life by Christ Jesus. David was actually a prophet, priest, and king. We are all called to prophesy. We are all priests who can minister to God with thanksgiving, praise, and worship.

David went through many trials, battles, hard times, and afflictions, but he overcame. We also go through many trials and afflictions, but God delivers us out of them all. David was a warrior, and he won every battle for God was with him and caused him to triumph. we are warriors, more than conquerors, who fight the good fight of faith. Christ has won the battles for us; we enforce the victory through praise.

David was a praiser and a worshiper of God. We are to offer up praise to God continually and worship Him in Spirit and truth. David danced, sang, prayed, sought God, and cried out to Him. We are to do the same. David was a psalmist who wrote songs and sang to God from his heart. God also wants us to sing to Him- psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.

David made many mistakes, and we can learn from David’s errors. He shows us what to do and what not to do. We are to stay humble and avoid becoming prideful. David became prideful, and he numbered Israel, which caused a plague to break out. We must do God’s will and not our own. David wanted Bathsheba and went against the will of God- and the consequences of that act and his attempts to cover it up by killing her husband were something he dealt with the rest of his life. We must walk with God with all our hearts and leave no room for compromise.

David had a heart for God. We should have hearts for the Lord as well. We must be people who love God, obey Him, and fulfill what He puts in our hearts to do. No matter what wrong David did, he repented and God forgave him. No matter what we do, God will forgive us when we turn to Him.

David’s lineage brought forth the King of kings. David has a place with God forever. We also have a place with Jesus, and we will rule with Him forever.
