Psalm 90: A Right Perspective

Psalm 90: A Right Perspective

God has been speaking to me about life, eternity and the length of our days out of Psalm 90. Let’s take a look at it together.

Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Psalm 90:1 (KJV)

We can dwell in God’s presence for our whole lifespan.

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men. For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up. In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth. For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled. Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.  For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Psalm 90:2-10 (KJV)

God is eternal. Our earthly life is temporal. Years, to God, are nothing. He can take thousands of years or one day to accomplish His work. For example, it took 4,000 years for Christ to come, but in just one day He died and in three days arose again. The plan of God was accomplished.

God never intended for man to live a lifespan of just 70 to 80 years. This statement was directed at Israel, who rebelled against God in the wilderness. Sin cut their lives short. Man was and is intended to live much longer, at least 120 years (Genesis 6:3). Some lived even longer. We must live in God’s presence to live a long and satisfied life.

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Psalm 90:12 (KJV)

We have to gain wisdom to make the most of our time, of our lifespan.

O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Psalm 90:14 (KJV)

God wants us to rejoice each of our days- for all our days.

Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children. Psalm 90:16 (KJV)

We must fellowship with God to make life worthwhile. As we encounter God and His beauty, He will establish and bless the work of our hands. So, what man does in life is not in vain. As we live in God’s presence, we encounter eternity in God, thus bringing eternity to earth now- in us. Therefore, all we do is for God and our few days here will count for God who is eternal. Our works are eternal.

17 And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.
