Paid in Full

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. John 19:30 (KJV)

The phrase it is finished would be accurately translated as paid in full. What did Jesus mean when He said, “It is finished?” He meant a number of things actually.

  • Jesus finished the assignment given to Him by His Father (John 18:37). Jesus fulfilled the Father’s will. He did what He was sent to do: bring man back to God.

  • Jesus was the Passover Lamb, the Lamb of God, the perfect Sacrifice that fulfilled all the sacrifices required under the law. He was the Lamb of God that took away the sins of the world. He took away the sin that Adam had passed down to the entire human race. Jesus took it all upon Himself and nailed it to His cross. Jesus atoned for man’s sins. (John 1:29, Colossians 2:14, I Corinthians 5:7, II Corinthians 5:21)

  • The price was paid. Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah who would suffer for us, our sins, our salvation, and our healing. (I Peter 2:24, Isaiah 53)

  • His sacrifice was the final, perfect sacrifice that washed away our sins instead of covering them. (Hebrews 10:10, Hebrews 9:12,22)

  • Our sin debt was paid in full. Jesus’ death on the cross cleared all debt. Jesus paid the price with His own blood. Now we’re bought with a price. We belong to Jesus and not to the devil. (John 19:30, Ephesians 1:7, I Corinthians 6:19-20)

  • The devil is defeated. Jesus got man’s authority back. We’re delivered from the kingdom of darkness into God’s Kingdom. (Colossians 2:15, Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-20)

  • We’ve been redeemed from the curse, which is poverty, sickness, and spiritual death. The blessing of Abraham is ours. We have prosperity, health and healing, and eternal life. We have the God kind of life. (Galatians 3:13-14)

Jesus paid for everything that had been lost. He bought it back and bought us back. It is all paid in full! There is nothing we can add to the finished work of Christ. Just believe, receive, and praise God for it. Walk in what Christ has given us. It cost Him everything to freely give us all things. Let’s add our amen to His finished work. It is finished. It is paid in full.
