The Bible never says to seek a position. Instead we are to seek the Lord and let God put us where He wants us. After all, God knows where we need to be and what we need to do better than we do. How many times have we wanted something, got it, then realized it was not what we needed? What we think we want is not always the best thing for us.

Jesus told of the self-promotion efforts of the pharisees and scribes, who always sought out the most important places, thinking they would be noticed and honored.

But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, and love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,  and greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. Matthew 23:5-7 (KJV)

A position or title is not what gives us importance or self-worth. As we discover how much God loves and cares for us, and values us, we learn who we are in Christ. Our identity as a child of God is much more important than being seen of men and having a fancy title.

The next time you are tempted to promote yourself or seek a position to be important, stop and check your motives. Ask yourself why you are doing what you are doing. Remember, you are important regardless of whether you have an important position in a company, church, sports team, or even in the entertainment industry. Our true importance lies in our position with God and the fact that we are made righteous by the blood of Jesus. The book of Ephesians talks about who we are in Christ. Our highest position is that we are in the family of God; we are his children.

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.  For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.  The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. Romans 8:14-17 (KJV)

God is our Father, and we are already seated in heavenly places in Christ. There’s no higher place or honor. True importance is found in a relationship with God rather than a title or position.
