Bought Back by the Blood

We’ve discussed that the blood of Jesus has provided a new and better covenant with better promises, but what are the promises? In other words, what does the blood do for us? The most important thing is that the blood of Jesus redeems us.

And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, And to open its seals; For You were slain, And have redeemed us to God by Your blood Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation. Revelation 5:9 (NKJV)

The word redeemed here means to purchase, or to buy back.

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?  For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body. I Corinthians 6:19-20 (New American Standard Bible, NASB)

The price mentioned here is the blood of Jesus that was shed to redeem, purchase, and buy us back from the slave market of sin. We were enslaved by satan, but the blood of Jesus changed all that. Verse 19 says we are not our own, meaning we now belong to Jesus. Now we can live with and for God, and Jesus can live His life through us.

I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20 (KJV)

Because we are redeemed, the blood enables us to overcome. The blood has made us more than conquerors. Jesus plundered the devil- and gave the spoils to us. We can claim victory through the blood.

They had power over him and won because of the blood of the Lamb and by telling what He had done for them. They did not love their lives but were willing to die. Revelation 12:11 (New International Version, NIV)

Since we are redeemed, we can also be continually cleansed from sin.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I John 1:9 (KJV)

The blood of Jesus gives us the ability to confess our sin when we mess up, and God will cleanse us. We don’t have to try to overcome sin on our own. When we apply the blood of Jesus, it has the power to forgive our sins and make us clean again. This is how we walk in victory; by trusting in the cleansing power of the blood.

In John 19:30, when Jesus said, “It is finished,” it was the same as if He had said, “Paid in full.” Our redemption was paid for by the powerful, wonderful, sinless blood of Jesus Christ!
